January/February
As part of our STEM Program and family engagement at Austin Elementary School, we would like to invite families to participate in a fun, engaging, and non-mandatory STEM activity to complete once a month. The activity would aim to involve members of your family group and would use simple and common materials found around your house. You will not need to purchase any additional materials. This month’s STEM Challenge is perfect for celebrating! Design and test a cannon that launches confetti. For inspiration, listen to this book. Don’t want confetti all over your house? Try using bird or flower seeds and spread the joy outside. This challenge explores the science concepts of elasticity, potential energy, and kinetic energy. Brainstorm machines or tools that use springs, bands, or other elastic materials to get work done. Suggested supplies: cardboard tubes; balloons, duct tape; confetti (bird or flower seeds). Use any materials that you have at home. When you complete your design, submit your photos/videos to this Google Form. Or you can submit your creation to the Flipgrid site to be featured in our weekly announcements. Don’t forget to fill out the Challenge Reflection Sheets. How to submit responses on Flipgrid: 1).
